Creative Uses for Leftovers: Mustgo Soup

soup.jpg

My husband vividly recalls his mother making Mustgo soup during his childhood. When he told me the name (only hearing the title–not seeing the spelling), I thought it sounded like an interesting type of food–maybe like “minestrone soup?” After all, he was born in Korea (missionary family)…

Then I realized that I too made “must go” soup! We love soups and Wednesdays have been designated as our “soup night.” I usually use a chicken or beef bullion for the base, adding rice and/or pasta of some sort, some veggies, and whatever in our fridge “must go.” This is a great way to use up leftovers, and it is easy to customize your soup however you like it.

Here are just a few of the variations we’ve enjoyed:

1. Taco Soup (using leftover meat, salsa, etc…, add taco seasoning and enjoy with sour cream, cheese)

2. Vegetable Soup (throw in all your leftover veggies plus some lentils, pasta)

3. Chicken Noodle Soup

4. Anything and Wild Rice Soup

5. Pizza Soup

And the list could go on and on. This is a great inexpensive way to extend the life of your leftovers and to save a little by using this as a “filler meal.”  Plus, it is a quick and easy meal that doesn’t take much effort–and who doesn’t love that!

Now, what do you do with leftover Mustgo soup? :)

Free DVD Viewings

It is hard in these days to find good, clean, quality family films. Not that this is a major life crisis, but we do enjoy a good movie now and then. (You can laugh, but while Daniel was in school full-time this past semester, I think it took us over 2 months to get through one movie! We would watch a 30 minute segment here and there on our less busy weekends…and finally finished it after the semester ended. :) )

After a particularly tiring week last month, we really wanted to just have a relaxing movie night. One problem–we didn’t have a movie. Knowing that our library’s selection is fairly limited and not wanting to pick up a random DVD that we would be disgusted with, I began to scour the web for an idea of where we could watch a free online movie.

That’s when I came across Netflix, where you can watch movies online and/or via mail. Their website offers a free 2 week trial to first-time users, but you can also find codes online for month-long trials. (We found ours on SlickDeals). We were unaware of how the system worked, and just signed up for the program that offered sending only 1 DVD at a time, which is just as well for the sake of self-discipline. And we were able to watch a movie over the internet (though the selections from that feature are somewhat limited).

Here are some of the features that we like:

1. The trial period is FREE!

2. They pay for shipping both ways.

3. There is a large selection of DVDs to choose from.

4. The response time is amazingly fast!

Since we’ve enjoyed listening to MP3s on the biographies of Christian men, we also enjoyed watching movies made about some of their biographies, and we were able to take advantage of the trial period while we were awaiting the arrival of our little girl. (Now that she’s here, I guess we can say that we’ve “stocked up” on our DVD viewing for a while. :) )

Film Review

However, we absolutely hate it when we pick up a movie that’s been recommended (or randomly selected)…only to find that we have to stop in the middle due to “questionable” elements that we find mid-movie. A while back, Daniel’s brother recommended the website Kids-In-Mind to us. Kids-In-Mind is very detailed in listing out the categories that parents may be concerned about (obviously, we’re not doing this to see what our baby girl can watch, we’re using it for ourselves). One downside is that it does not list taking God’s name in vain as a language issue, so it is still hard to judge where a film will be on that. Of course, God’s Word must be our ultimate standard when deciding what we should set before our eyes.

Edit: Several readers commented on another good site to review movies before viewing them: Pluggedin Online, which does review whether or not a movie has issues with God’s name being taken in vain.

I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.

One Week Ago Today…

Almost one week ago today, I went into labor for our precious little girl. Little did we realize that it would be over 40 hours from then until we would meet Hana Kate face to face. God was so kind to us in giving us the whole day Thursday together, and though I had contractions all day that day, it was not until late Thursday night/early Friday that the “real stuff” started happening…right when I started to cut my hair. (Umm…it ended up being a bit shorter than I originally planned.) ;) And right after I posted about God’s material provisions for our family.

Now, our baby girl is sleeping her bed, five days old. What a little big miracle from our wonderful heavenly Father!

Hana Kate is adjusting to life well, and we’re enjoying seeing her eyes more. It’s hard to believe she’s 4 days old! We are so thankful for this little life and God’s mercy in giving her to us…realizing the sobering reality that had this been 100 years ago (or even less), she, and possibly her mommy, would probably not be here today (more on that later).
I apologize for the picture quality–I was trying to avoid using our flash.

Introducing…

Hana Katherine Hesed

February 2, 2008, 11:01p.m.

8 lbs., 2 oz., 21¼ in.

Hana is the Malagasy spelling of Biblical Hannah. We chose the name Hana for our first daughter because of God’s answer to our prayer, as Hana prayed, “for this child I prayed…”

~

Katherine is the name of Daniel’s late grandmother, who went to be with the Lord on November 15, 2007. We decided to add this to her name a few weeks after Grandma’s death.

~

Hesed is a transliteration of the Hebrew word for “mercy” and “lovingkindness,” though its full meaning encompasses much more. Our daughter is a testimony to one of the many examples and lessons on God’s mercy to us that we have seen magnified to us in this past year.

Thriving on a $20 Weekly Grocery Budget

When your weekly household income is less than what the average American spends on groceries per week, you are obviously going to need to have a grocery budget that is a bit different than “average.” Fortunately, we had been working on living off of a $35/week food/toiletry budget for about a year (thanks to the practical ideas found on Biblical Womanhood and Money Saving Mom) before we reached the point where we needed to lower our budget even further.

When we first started working down this budget category, we admittedly cut out meat and milk from our diet, and yes, enjoyed lots of beans and lentils (not necessarily a bad thing!). There were also several times where we were given food–including meat, milk, and fresh fruit and vegetables–an incredible blessing and clear provision from our Jehovah Jireh!

(Edit: Wedo include meat in our diet. I grew up on venison, and we usually get some from my dad each season. We also have a few friends who hunt here who pass along their “extras.” It’s much healthier and less expensive. We do also eat other meats, too!)

But shortly thereafter, the Lord allowed me to learn a lot about CVS, couponing, and some special food deals in our area. (In fact, for the month of January we’ve been trying to restore our savings a bit and have actually been able to make do with an average of less than $8 a week, actually spending $0 out of pocket for 3 of those weeks and including what I purchased for making meals to freeze ahead for when our baby arrives.)

We are able to stick with this budget by prioritizing our spending in the following order:

1. CVS ($0 – $3.00 per week)

By learning to roll the ECB deals and using $/$$ coupons at CVS, we are able to get almost all of our needed toiletries, non-prescription medicines, and diapers for less than a dollar or two each week. In addition, we also get milk and eggs weekly, as well as many packaged foods such as tuna, peanut butter, crackers, juices, etc… (Of course, we also end up with a lot of other edible items that we don‘t need!)

Right now we have a CVS gift card and actually don’t pay anything “out of pocket.” We anticipate this lasting us at least 2 or 3 more months. My husband also recently began CVS-ing, and is quite the pro! (My friend also went on her first CVS trip this week and got some amazing deals! Make sure to check them out at her blog.)

103_0595.jpg

We have over 2,000 diapers awaiting our daughter’s arrival. They are all from CVS, with the exception of a few we received as gifts–we have not had to pay for any of these diapers (the large blue tub is also full of diapers)! Eventually, I’d love to transition to cloth…but free is cheaper for now!

2. Sav-Mor Food Yardsale/Sidewalk Sale ($6 – $12 every 2-3 weeks)

This is a local thing, but every 2 to 3 weeks, Sav-Mor (a discount food store) has what they call a “Sidewalk Sale.” On Saturday mornings, they line their parking lot with banana boxes filled with expired or “unwanted” food from various grocery stores in the area. It is a blessing that so many of these foods come from stores like Whole Foods and Ingles.

Hundreds of people line the perimeter of the boxes, and when the store representative says, “go,” people dive into the boxes filling their own banana boxes (provided by the store). You can fill up a banana box with as much food of your choice as you can find, and each banana box you fill costs $6. Though the variety changes each time, we have a general idea that they will have things like cereals, crackers, pasta, canned goods, and flour every time. This last week we only needed flour, and were able to get over 60 pounds of organic, pastry, and whole wheat flour for just $6!

103_0406.jpg

This is 2 banana boxes worth of food ($12) from a recent food yard-sale

3. Local Grocery Stores, Target ($5-$15/week)

Since we are able to get most of our non-perishable items through CVS and Sav-Mor, we purchase mainly dairy and fresh produce (and meat when needed) from our grocery stores. Our best “coupon” store is Bi-Lo, which doubles coupons up to $.60. Bi-Lo also marks down soon-to-expire produce and meat. I only buy salad when it is marked down to $.99. If I go on the right day (not a weekend), there is almost always some variety of salad and vegetable marked down. (I’d love to shop where I’ve heard some store double even higher coupon values!) I also follow the Target deals on iMommies, and am usually able to get things free there every month.

Free cheese from Target! (HT: moneysavingmom)

4. Aldi (any leftover budget $)

We are blessed to have several Aldi around here, but to be honest, I now only go once or twice a month for things were aren’t able to get less expensively through the previously mentioned venues.

I then plan our menus based on what we are able to get at all of these stores, rather than the other way around. However, after shopping this way for several months we have a pretty reliable pantry of foods, and only need to vary what we have as our side dishes. I still have much to learn!

Sample menu: here.

~

Within a few months we do hope to “up” this budget category to be able to get a little more fresh produce, particularly as we’ve been trying to spend as little “out of pocket” as possible for the last month. Of course, this type of budget may not be feasible in all areas, and we realize that this is God’s provision for us during this season of life. We one day anticipate being missionaries in Madagascar, and I know I will have to learn a whole different way of shopping there. (Of course, the Sav-Mor yard sale shopping atmosphere might be good preparation, but I doubt the markets will accept coupons! :) )

We praise the Lord for His present provision and pray that He will allow us to use the lessons He has taught us during this season to be better stewards of whatever He may provide for us in the future.

A Quick Update…

Our little girl is still safe and warm inside her mommy and doesn’t seem to be indicating an imminent exodus. Though we’ve had a few moments of anxiousness and impatience, for the most part we have been truly thankful for the extra time we’ve had to organize, clean, and prepare (and update this blog!). We have an appointment later today, so we’ll see if there’s any news.

We do have heat again, but there are some complications for which we are praying for God to “turn the [company's] heart” in His hand “like the rivers of waters.” We would appreciate prayer regarding this, and are blessed to rest in the knowledge that His way is always best, and praise Him for a warm home.

Daniel has been unable to find additional work outside his part-time job, but the Lord continues to meet our needs and we’ve enjoyed the extra time together. He’s also been able to work on some much needed repairs and projects and does an amazing job! Lord-willing, though, he’ll start working full-time at his new job mid-February.

A Blessing in Song: Abiding Radio

.
abiding-radio.png
.
We are blessed in our age to have so many Christian-growth-encouraging resources available at the click of a button or the flick of a wrist. In our home, we are very thankful for the wealth of good, Christian music and like to listen to it for a good portion of our day. This past year, we were introduced to Abiding Radio, which plays quality, conservative Christian music over the internet, and is available for…FREE!
.
If you have relatively “fast” internet service and are able to leave it up during the day, this will be a great blessing to you! It’s also great for playing “background music” while working on computer projects! (Just click on the picture to go to the link.)

A Tour of My Coupon (and More!) Organizer

coupon-organization-2.jpg

Frustrated with failed attempts to arrange my coupons in an easily accessible and visible system, I set out on the quest to find the perfect coupon organizer. I googled, lurked on blogs, and scoured search engines…but I still couldn’t find an organizational system I was happy with. Somewhere in my hunt, I read of using baseball card holders to store coupons. I tried it, but…my three-ring binder wasn’t so handy at making sure the coupons didn’t fall out as I traveled to the grocery store. And thus began the formation of “Keren’s Coupon Organizer.” (creative title, huh? I’m happily taking suggestions…) So, let’s take a tour of my less-than-perfect coupon organizer:

In the true spirit of couponing, I was even able to obtain all my supplies at no cost to me! I was able to get a Trapper Keeper at CVS, in which both my coupons and home organization information is kept. I like the Trapper Keeper over a simple three-ring binder because (1) it can be zipped up to prevent spills and (2) it has several storage pockets in which I can store scissors and other supplies.

coupon-organization-4-1.jpg

I was also get page-dividers at CVS, and used them to divide my organizer into desired sections. The particular dividers I chose have pockets, which allows me to store items I’ll sort later.

coupon-organization-5-1.jpg

Knowing that coupons would take up the majority of the notebook, I put the coupon section at the end of my Trapper Keeper. There, I subdivided my main coupons into 3 categories: (1) Grocery, (2) Household & Toiletries, and (3) Medicine & Pharmacy. (I used Avery Write On Tabs–also free from CVS!–to do this.) In this section I used plastic baseball card holder sheets to store the coupons, and sort them alphabetically within the sections. I leave some spaces blank, and when I get a bunch of coupons and have not more empty slots, I stick a new plastic sheet in between pages (so it’s not always precisely alphabetical.)

coupon-organization-6-1.jpg

After the general coupon section, I store my CVS coupons. I use a combination of the baseball card storage sheets and 4×6 photo album (pictured) plastic sheets.

coupon-organization-7-1.jpg

Following the CVS section, I have a space for “Specific Store Coupons,” where I use a combination of the above mentioned plastic sheets, as well…

coupon-organization-1.jpg

and full page plastic protector sheets.

103_0570.jpg

So there you have it-that’s what works for me! I’m interested in hearing about more ideas, though!

After I put my organizer together, I did stumble upon this coupon organizer: Mrs. A’s Coupon Organizer. (To learn about a special discount on Mrs. A’s Organizer, go here.) Though I probably would not purchase the whole system, I would love to eventually get some of their patented coupon holder insert pages, which I think would allow me to organize coupons more efficiently. But until we reopen our “extra’s” budget, I’m very satisfied with my current system!

Discouraging the Fungus Among Us: Preserving Your Kitchen Sponge

kitchentiptuesdays.jpg

Perhaps I am strange in that I prefer to use a sponge over a washcloth for dish washing, but I’ve found it to be slightly more effective, particularly on the wonderful hardened crusties. Since our dishwasher is me, our sponge sees a bit more mileage than the average kitchen sponge. I hated coming to the continual realization that the sponge remained damp even after I squeezed it out (and knowing that moisture is a great breeding ground for microorganisms!), and wanted a way for the sponge to dry.

For months, I had resting on my counter a “mesh” business card holder that I planned to turn into a verse card holder. One day, I realized that because it was mesh, I could place the sponge on it and allow it to air-dry between use.

spongeholder-1.jpg

It has been faithful my sponge holder ever since!
