Discouraging the Fungus Among Us: Preserving Your Kitchen Sponge

Perhaps I am strange in that I prefer to use a sponge over a washcloth for dish washing, but I’ve found it to be slightly more effective, particularly on the wonderful hardened crusties. Since our dishwasher is me, our sponge sees a bit more mileage than the average kitchen sponge. I hated coming to the continual realization that the sponge remained damp even after I squeezed it out (and knowing that moisture is a great breeding ground for microorganisms!), and wanted a way for the sponge to dry.

For months, I had resting on my counter a “mesh” business card holder that I planned to turn into a verse card holder. One day, I realized that because it was mesh, I could place the sponge on it and allow it to air-dry between use.

It has been faithful my sponge holder ever since!

That’s a cute idea! I posted a couple weeks ago about using the baby bottle brush that has a suction thing on the end that you can suction right on to your sink – well, a couple days ago I went to the store and they had new ones that you could put dish soap in it and then press a button to squirt it out.

Great idea! I disinfect my sponge regularly, but have been frustrated that in the meantime there wasn’t really any good way of storing it. I think I need to get me one of those! 😀

Super cool idea!!! I put mine in the microwave for a minute before each use, but I still don’t like just sitting it down on the counter. This is a great idea for storing it. Thanks! 🙂

One more thing…my 2 1/2 year old came in here while I was typing my comment. She has refused to take a nap today. She heard the beautiful guitar music playing, lied down on my bed and fell asleep within 30 seconds! Woohoo! Thanks AGAIN! 🙂

I need to microwave mine more often! I took microbiology in college…and well, it’s just gross what could be growing on there!

That is so funny that the music put your daughter to sleep! Definitely a first for my blog, but glad it was a blessing! 😉

you can microwave the sponge for 45 secs after use and that kills the germs. I seen it on the news and it helps it dry and it helps clean your microwave.
